They're Doing to America What They Did within Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying the public his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently research projected his petroleum strategies would kill another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing major areas of the White House to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense of him since they are atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.

It is emphatically definitely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. The Savior's reaction to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.

The evident and direct truth that Christ from scripture requests a kind of radical love focused on the poor is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

So I have been inspired to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We shall require to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?

America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the finest within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to what makes it special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it imply pretending the worst regarding America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it signifies both humility and faith, a combination that committed US believers ought to accept.
