Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
