Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of materials that contained little new data.
